December 29, 2004, Taipei, Taiwan – In
response to the immediate needs for disaster relief and
humanitarian aid caused by the recent tsunami and earthquake that
hit Southeast Asia on December 26, China Airlines is taking the
initiative to transport rescue teams and relief goods to Thailand
and Indonesia.
At 8:35 a.m. of December 28, China Airlines flight CI673
carried 10 persons from the Fire Department of Taipei City
Government and ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as tents
and food package weigh 2500 kgs departed Taipei for Medan,
Indonesia. Other emergency supplies weigh over 1500 kgs was
airlifted to Indonesia on December 29. Since carrying the relief
goods, China Airlines was the first carrier to land in Medan
today. Local officials welcome the immediate supports brought by
China Airlines.
Another rescue team of 35 members formed by Chinese Rescue
Association took CI645 at 12:40 the same day to Phuket, Thailand
for rescue mission.
“China Airlines is a corporate member in the international
society,” said Dr. Yao-Chung Chiang, Chairman of China Airlines.
“We are just performing our duty as a responsible corporate
citizen.”
