December 29, 2004, Taipei, Taiwan – In the
wake of Indian Ocean tsunami and its effects, China Airlines
decided to suspend its Taipei-Phuket service from December 30 due
to the demand decrease. The twice weekly Kaohsiung-Phuket service
has been suspended on December 29. China Airlines will evaluate
the market situation to decide the timing for resumption.
According to Pacific Asia Travel Associations, the tsunami only
affected the Indian Ocean coast. Around 90% of rooms in Phuket are
still operational. Other places across most of Asia operate as
usual and many places are heavily book.
China Airlines today still operates CI645 from Taipei to Phuket
and carried 15 passengers and will transport 130 passengers back
to Taipei on flight CI646.
